Signals of Strength: Communications During Steadfast Dart

SMARDAN, Romania - At the heart of NATO’s Steadfast Dart, the comprehensive NATO exercise currently underway, the Royal Signals unit of the British Army plays a crucial role. Exemplified by the efforts of dedicated team members like Josh, Bethan, and signaler Hayden. Their task is to ensure seamless communication across all levels of the operation, facilitating effective coordination and execution.

Coordination and Planning: Josh works closely with operational planning teams to oversee the deployment and functioning of communication systems essential for command and control. "I am part of the operations team," he explains. "My job involves a lot of planning, ensuring that our troops have the guidance and resources they need for their tasks."

Bethan is responsible for delivering and maintaining the main mobile headquarters for brigade operations. "My role is to establish the headquarters and make sure all communication systems are up and running, providing a working environment for the brigade staff," she details.

Seeing the impact of our work, traveling the world, and experiencing this unique aspect of military life is incredibly rewarding.

Secure and Reliable Communication: Signaler Hayden’s role as a network engineer involves setting up and maintaining local area networks (LANs) within the operational headquarters. "On exercise Steadfast Dart, I am here working with my team to create a headquarters that is movable and accessible anywhere in the field. We build LANs using secure terminals, allowing our staff officers to produce battle plans effectively," Hayden describes. His work ensures that secure, reliable communications are maintained, enabling the transmission of critical operational data across various platforms.

A significant aspect of Steadfast Dart is the collaboration with other NATO forces. The Royal Signals unit not only sets up their own systems but also integrates with Romanian CIS (Communication and Information Systems) equipment, marking a first in such cooperation. "It's interesting to see how other countries approach similar challenges, and there’s a lot we can learn from each other," Josh notes, emphasising the cross-national learning opportunities that exercises like Steadfast Dart provide.

Incredibly Rewarding: The last few weeks have been intense for the Royal Signals, involving preparing vehicles and equipment, ensuring everything is functional, and overcoming unexpected logistical challenges. Despite these hurdles, the sense of achievement is palpable. "It’s all worth it," Hayden states. "Seeing the impact of our work, traveling the world, and experiencing this unique aspect of military life is incredibly rewarding."

As Steadfast Dart progresses, the efforts of the Royal Signals are a testament to the critical nature of communication in military operations. Their work ensures that as NATO forces come together, they do so with support systems that enable effective communication, essential for the success of any military endeavor. This integration and cooperation highlight the exercise’s goal of enhancing interoperability among NATO allies, ensuring they can operate seamlessly in any environment.
