Cold Winds, Warm Spirits in Smârdan

SMÂRDAN, Romania – Training together is what every soldier at Steadfast Dart aspires to. It’s an opportunity to align with your allies. It is just the beginning of Steadfast Dart, NATO’s biggest exercise of 2025, but the Romanian camp at Smârdan is already bustling with activity. Last-minute preparations for the multinational scenario are in full swing. Despite the cold, every soldier is out in the field. Sergeant Zalincu brushes off the wintry weather: “We’re military, we must adapt and prepare for all conditions, just in case we need to take real action.”

We’re military, we must adapt and prepare for all conditions, just in case we need to take real action.

“We’re from around here. We’re used to the weather,” says First Lieutenant Catargiu with a slight smirk when subzero temperatures are mentioned, “let’s just hope it stays this way!” Catargiu is part of the 151st Infantry Battalion, 15th Mechanised Brigade. In fact, most of the Romanian troops involved in Steadfast Dart are familiar with the Smârdan Training Area and know their way around. Their homes, families, and loved ones are all in this part of the country. Every morning, when they put on their combat uniforms, they know what’s at stake.

The 15th Mechanised Brigade forms the first line of defence on NATO’s Eastern Flank. However, it’s always reassuring to see your allies next to you, ready to react quickly and show the same dedication. “All my family and friends are counting on me and the Romanian military to protect them. I think they can trust us under any circumstances,” says Zalincu. “I am honoured to be here because we have the chance to train and fight alongside our partners,” he adds.

They will be in Smârdan for three weeks. “We’ll have the opportunity to train alongside soldiers from other armies, to learn, experiment, and improve various procedures. This will definitely be an interesting experience, a new challenge. I’m confident we’ll have nothing but positive stories to share,” explains Lieutenant Colonel Mihoci, commander of the 151st Battalion, also known as the Black Wolves. The Black Wolves are an elite unit of the Romanian Army, tested time and again in various operational theatres. “During Steadfast Dart, we’re happy to train with our NATO partners. We’re eager to work together, observe their tactics, techniques, and procedures, practise our own, and hopefully learn and improve,” adds First Lieutenant Catargiu.

Warrant Officer Barbălată has served in the 631st Tank Battalion for over 15 years. There are no more secrets between him, his tank crew, and their machine. “A strong bond is essential; it’s the most important thing,” he says. This level of connection is something to aspire to, not just at the tank-crew level. In a multinational exercise, he admits he’s always trying to “steal” the craft. “We live in an era of speed. The battlefield is constantly evolving, and we must adapt. We observe, learn, and adjust everything to our conditions, technology, and capabilities,” he concludes.

The troops are in high spirits here in Smârdan. Everyone knows the essential role they play in ensuring the smooth execution of the exercise.
