SACEUR, NATO head visit Iraq to reaffirm Alliance support

MONS, BelgiumSupreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), U.S. Army Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Iraq, February 4-5, to reaffirm the Alliance’s support to the country through the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI).
“NMI, at the request and invitation of the Republic of Iraq, continues to assist the country in building more sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security institutions and forces,” said General Cavoli. “This is to make certain that Iraq can continue to stabilize the country itself, fight terrorism, and prevent the return Daesh, which keeps both its citizens and ours safe.”

During the visit, the Secretary General and SACEUR met with the President of the Republic of Iraq, Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, His Excellency Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Commander of NMI, Royal Netherlands Army Lieutenant General Lucas Schreurs, NMI personnel, and others.

The visit to Iraq was General Cavoli’s second as SACEUR, and Rutte’s first as Secretary General. General Cavoli last visited the country in March 2023 with the former Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Royal Netherlands Navy Admiral Rob Bauer.

NMI, a non-combat, advisory and capacity-building mission, was established in 2018 following a request from the Iraqi authorities and in full respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It falls under the responsibility of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, one of Allied Command Operations’ (ACOs’) joint force commands.

SHAPE is the military headquarters of ACO.
