NATO acquires AI-enabled Warfighting System
MONS, Belgium – On March 25, 2025, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) and Palantir Technologies Inc. (Palantir) finalized the acquisition of the Palantir Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO) for employment within NATO’s Allied Command Operations (ACO), marking a significant advancement in the modernization of NATO’s warfighting capabilities.
“NCIA is pleased to team up with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and Palantir to deliver MSS NATO to the Warfighter, providing customized state-of-the-art AI capabilities to the Alliance, and empowering our forces with the tools required on the modern battlefield to operate effectively and decisively,” said Mr. Ludwig Decamps, NCIA General Manager.
The MSS NATO capability empowers commanders and warfighters to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) safely and securely in core military operations. By providing a common data-enabled warfighting capability to the Alliance, through a wide range of AI applications – from large language models (LLMs) to generative and machine learning – MSS NATO enhances intelligence fusion and targeting, battlespace awareness and planning, and accelerated decision-making.
“We’re proud to support NATO’s drive to bolster deterrence by deploying an AI-enabled warfighting platform at SHAPE. This partnership underlines the Alliance’s determination to lead fearlessly with technological innovation,” said Shon Manasco, Senior Counselor at Palantir Technologies.
Through MSS NATO, SHAPE plans to accelerate the adoption of other novel capabilities being developed across the Alliance - including new, emerging AI models, and modeling and simulation - demonstrating a strong and abiding partnership between the North America and European technology base.
“ACO is at the forefront of adopting technologies that make NATO more agile, adaptable, and responsive to emerging threats. Innovation is core to our Warfighting ability. Maven Smart System NATO enables the Alliance to leverage complex data, accelerate decision-making, and by doing so, adds a true operational value,” said General Markus Laubenthal, SHAPE Chief of Staff.
The procurement of MSS NATO was one of the most expeditious in NATO’s history, taking only six months from outlining the requirement to acquiring the system.
It is expected that ACO will begin using the new system within the next 30 days.
SHAPE is the military headquarters of ACO.
