MONS, Belgium - The Polish Special Operations Forces (Wojska Specjalne) transitioned its roles and responsibilities as Special Operations Component Command of the NATO Response Force to their Spanish counterparts, the Mando Conjunto de Operaciones Especiales (MCOE) on Thursday, Jun. 20, 2024.
This transition marks two changes: Polish Special Operations Forces (SOF) to Spanish SOF; and the assumption of a new command role by Spanish SOF as NATO’s new Allied Reaction Force (ARF) Special Operations Component Command (SOCC). The change from NATO Response Force to the Allied Reaction Force enhances the operational capabilities and readiness of its Special Operations Forces, to address evolving global security challenges.
The transition between Polish and Spanish SOF exemplifies the spirit of NATO
Over the past year, as the NRF SOCC, Polish SOF led the way and spearheaded numerous trainings and exercises that made significant contributions to NATO's collective defence. This year provided a wealth of operational insights and lessons learned for allied SOF. The Polish SOF focus on rapid deployment, interoperability, and tactical coordination across diverse environments, is a testament to their dedication and expertise.
A key lesson identified was the importance of seamless integration and communication for the Alliance’s multidomain, multinational task forces. Additionally, the Polish SOF's initiative to develop standardised operating procedures and conduct joint training exercises set a benchmark for allied/NATO SOF. These enhancements raised the SOCC’s effectiveness and will ensure cohesive operations in the high-pressure situations that the future ARF SOCC will face.

Major General Sławomir Drumowicz, Commander of the Polish Special Operations Component Command, reflected on the importance of building partnerships to enhance interoperability among SOF and air, land, sea, space and cyber domains. “Our focus has been on readiness and adaptability. The dynamic nature of today's threats demands that we remain vigilant and prepared to respond at a moment's notice. I am confident that the Spanish SOF will continue to uphold these principles,” he said.
The handover comes at a time when NATO faces a complex and unpredictable security environment. Emerging threats, including hybrid warfare tactics and cyber-attacks, necessitate a robust and agile response capability. The Spanish SOF, recognised for their operational excellence and adaptability, are well positioned to build on the foundations laid by their Polish colleagues, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity in operations.
Brigadier General Angel Herrezuelo, Commander of the Spanish Joint Special Operations Command and the incoming commander of the ARF SOCC, underscored the strategic importance of this transition. “Our mission is to protect and defend NATO's interests, and this requires us to be at the forefront of innovation and preparedness. The insights and experiences shared by the Polish SOF will be invaluable as we navigate this challenging landscape,” he stated, emphasising the pivotal role of this transition in shaping the future of NATO's Special Operations Forces. As the Spanish SOF assumes their new role as the ARF SOCC, the emphasis will remain on building a resilient and responsive force. The integration of lessons learned and a forward-looking strategy will be crucial in maintaining NATO's strategic edge.
Central to the success of all NATO's SOF operations is the role of the Allied Special Operations Forces Command (SOFCOM). The coordination and synchronisation facilitated by SOFCOM ensures that all Allied SOF can leverage their unique strengths and capabilities. This unified approach is critical for executing complex operations and responding swiftly to crises.
Major General Tony Turner, Deputy Commander of Allied SOFCOM, highlighted the importance of this collaborative framework. "The transition between Polish and Spanish SOF exemplifies the spirit of NATO. It is not just about transferring roles and responsibilities; it is about sharing knowledge, refining our strategies, and enhancing our collective security to deliver strategic effects. Coordination and synchronisation are the bedrock of our operational success," he remarked.
