SHAPE continues to honour the annual tradition of the Malmedy Christmas Tree Lightning Ceremony

MONS, Belgium – The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) community gathered in front of the headquarters for the 57th annual Malmedy Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024.

Since 1967, when SHAPE relocated to Belgium, the community of Malmedy has generously gifted the headquarters with a fir tree for the holiday season. The Christmas tree is a symbol of gratitude to the United States Armed Forces for the city's liberation during World War II. However, the gift soon became a gift not just to the U.S. personnel at SHAPE, but to the entire SHAPE community for their defence of freedom in Europe.

General Christopher G. Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), and Mrs Aline Pierre, Malmedy Alderwoman and Delegation head, had the honour of lighting the tree in front of the SHAPE community.

“As we light this tree tonight, we do so honouring the memory of those who came before us. Those whose courage, sacrifice, and resilience serves as the foundation for the cooperation we share today, and the bright future we continue building together,” said Cavoli.

The Christmas tree will be illuminated in front of SHAPE every day until Jan. 2 from 8:00 to 9:00 and from dusk until 23:00. On Christmas Eve, the lights will remain on until dawn Christmas morning.
