TREVISO, Italy - The 17th Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Commanders Conference, hosted by the Multi-National CIMIC Group (MNCG) from Motta Di Livinza, Italy, began on Monday, May 27, 2024, with a comprehensive programme for both military and civilian representatives.
The conference, planned for one week, will consist of CIMIC related disciplines allowing both military and civilian organisations to share experiences, procedures and follow up activities post-briefings.
MNCG Commander, Colonel Ugo Proietto, opened the event outlining the core theme - NATO CIMIC within Alliance territory. The requirement for all CIMIC activities to be involved in all planning purposes, at all stages is a vital operational enabler where failure to fully understand the civil environment can have detrimental consequences.
Never before has the need to demonstrate strength, unity and trust been more vital
“NATO continues to be capable to defend every inch of its territory and through the family of plans, our processes and procedures are effectively streamlined to meet the need. CIMIC functions, through the new NATO Concept, take into consideration activities such as Host Nation support, liaison and focused support, as well as cooperation with local and international organisations. This demonstrates our commitment to ensuring protection for our people,” said Brigadier General Editson Zarka, ACOS J9 for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).
“This week will be an excellent opportunity to assess all such activities in peace, crisis and conflict, but particularly procedures in place now in order to underpin the full range of our deterrence posture. Never before has the need to demonstrate strength, unity and trust been more vital,” Zarka added.
Throughout this week several key organisations such as SHAPE, the European Union and OSCE will provide updates followed by panel briefings concerning the main theme and other aspects of Crisis Management. Through mutual understanding and cooperation this 17th CIMIC Commanders Conference will further develop shared interests and further reinforce support for the rules based order.
