Slovenian forces hone operational skills in simulated electronic warfare environment

LUBLJANA, Slovenia – The Republic of Slovenia is hosting military electronic warfare exercise Invisible Shield 2023 until Feb. 17, 2023 in Postojna, Slovenia.

The exercise, aimed at training armed forces and civilian emergency services to function while exposed to electronic warfare challenges, involves some 200 participants from the Slovenian Armed Forces and civilian emergency organisations. They are testing their tactics, techniques and procedures supported by aircraft from the Slovenian and U.S. Air Forces.

The objectives of the exercise are to train aircrews and helicopter crews in self-protection activities, train joint terminal attack controllers and operators of various systems in operating in electronic jamming conditions, operations in voice communications jamming conditions and remote identification of various aircraft systems.

“With exercise Invisible Shield 2023, 15th Wing of the Slovenian Armed Forces intends to maintain and upgrade the cooperation of the Slovenian Armed Forces units with police, firefighting, emergency and rescue personnel preserving our expertise and acquiring new knowledge and experience in an electronic warfare environment,” said Colonel Janez Gaube, Commander of Slovenia’s 15th Wing.

“For this purpose we deploy our Bell-206 and Cougar AS AL 532 helicopters as well as the Pilatus PC-9M and Zlin 242 aircraft and several military and civilian unmanned systems to assist the training,” Colonel Gaube said. “We are grateful for the support we receive from U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter aircraft flying out of Aviano Air Base, Italy,” he added.

The training is taking place at the main training area of the Slovenian Armed Forces in Postojna, where the aircraft and helicopters are providing fire support. Airmen are also simulating air support in the areas of Gotenics, Glažuta, Strmice near Vrhnika, and at the Ljubljanski radar position. The allied F-16 aircraft are supporting the exercise only at the main training area. The training also includes the 16th Air Traffic Surveillance and Control Centre of the Republic of Slovenia, which is ensuring a coordinated and safe conduct of air operations.

The exercise commenced on Sunday, Feb. 12th.
