MONS, Belgium - A delegation of Colombian Policy Makers visited Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023 for a briefing on NATO’s structure, current operations and aspects of Cyber Defence and the Deter and Defend concept.
“I am very pleased to welcome the delegation to SHAPE reinforcing the special relationship that we have with the Republic of Colombia. Such visits reflect the importance of how we can learn from key areas of expertise, and indeed what NATO can offer through our wide range of capabilities and skills. This two way street of benefitting both is essential and productive," said SHAPE’s Chief of Staff (COS) Admiral Joachim Rühle.
Strong relationships with partners effectively contribute to global security
“Since the illegal annexation of Crimea, NATO has made significant advances in all our range of plans, and with the invasion of Ukraine our approach to deterrence and defence, and enhancing our military strength to defend ourselves is even more visible. Strong relationships with partners effectively contribute to global security and again I am pleased with the purpose and the outcomes of this visit,” added Rühle.
Visits by such informed institutions provide excellent opportunities to inform, and exchange ideas with such audiences, and enable discussion on NATO’s Collective Defence posture and other areas of mutual interest.
The Republic of Columbia participate in NATO’s Operational Capability Concept programmes and SHAPE will host the Columbian War College on Sept. 11th for a separate programme.
Columbia became one of NATO’s global partners and the Alliance’s first Latin American partner in 2017. Today, NATO and Columbia continue to strengthen dialogue and cooperation to address a number of global security challenges, including cyber security, terrorism, the fight against corruption and maritime security.
