High Level Republic of Korea Visits to SHAPE and NATO Headquarters

MONS, Belgium - SHAPE and NATO Headquarters hosted delegates from the Republic of Korea during the week of Mar. 27 to 31, 2023 to discuss a variety of issues with the partner nation.

Deputy Chief of Staff Partnership Directorate Rear Admiral Gunnstein Bruasdal received Major General Inhyeong Yeo, the Deputy Chief of Staff G2/3, Republic of Korea Army, and his delegation on Monday, Mar. 27 at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons. The staff discussed current partnership activities with South Korea focusing on participation in NATO Exercises as well as Collective Education and Training.

“Visits from our NATO Partners are critical in reinforcing and enhancing our understanding of how we both operate and where we can work together more closely in strengthening defence and other areas of mutual interest,” said Bruasdal. “Participation in NATO partnership in any form, provides invaluable opportunities and I am very grateful to Major General Inhyeong Yeo and his team for visiting us. Our discussions were very fruitful.”

Meantime, Republic of Korea senior policy makers, sponsored by the US Mission to NATO, visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels and received briefings about SHAPE’s command structure, procedures, operations, and training and how SHAPE fits into the overall NATO framework.

They were also briefed by several operational subject matter experts with a focus on Defence and Deterrence of the Euro Atlantic Area. The group was led by Major General Robert Sofge, Assistant Chief of Staff J5, United States Forces Korea and was accompanied by the South Korean Defence Attache Colonel Sung Ho Park.

For the remainder of 2023, the Republic of Korea and NATO will enhance cooperation in order to strengthen the NATO-Korea partnership through continued discussions between all stakeholders.
