U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli nominated to be 20th SACEUR

MONS, Belgium – On May 3, 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III announced that the President of the United States has nominated U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli for appointment to the grade of general while serving as Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander, U.S. European Command. NATO has also agreed to appoint General Cavoli as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. If confirmed by the Senate, General Cavoli will succeed U.S. Air Force General Tod D. Wolters, who has held the position since May 2019.

General Cavoli is currently serving as Commander, United States Army Europe and Africa headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany.

The Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) is responsible, for the overall direction and conduct of global military operations for NATO. The position is held by a U.S. Flag or General officer, who also serves as Commander U.S. European Command. His command is exercised from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium.

The position was established in 1951 when General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first SACEUR. If confirmed, General Cavoli will be the twentieth officer to hold this prestigious post.
