NATO exercise Steadfast Jupiter 22 concludes

MONS, Belgium – Exercise STEADFAST JUPITER 2022, which included Computer Assisted / Command Post Exercises, was held at various NATO entities to cover multi-layer training events from Oct 10 to 20, 2022.

"STEADFAST JUPITER 22 was designed to develop and test procedures that will enable Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) to participate in the ambitious STEADFAST JUPITER 23 according to its warfighting role. In this, we think it was fully successful. The leadership involvement and the willingness to take on difficult problems under time pressure really shows the strength of this headquarters and our Alliance. My team and I all look forward to continued work with SHAPE," said Colonel Ryan Squires, Chief EXCON.

Significant progress was made in understanding how NATO may conduct targeting in the Defence of the Alliance, under the DDA concept

SHAPE conducted a vignette-based training event at the strategic level for the staff in SHAPE's Command Centre, with the support of the Joint Warfare Centre (JWC), SHAPE Divisions and other stakeholders. Vignettes covered specific cross-cutting and theatre-wide areas of Strategic Enablement, Cyber, Joint Effects and the Civil Environment. These areas were chosen as a result of lessons identified from STEADFAST JUPITER 21, to de-risk (as much as possible) STEADFAST JUPITER 23 and to train as a warfighting headquarters.

"Allied staff and leadership, led by SHAPE Joint Targeting and Effects staff, used STEADFAST JUPITER 22 developing models and processes for the orchestration of the Alliance's Targeting Enterprise. Significant progress was made in understanding how NATO may conduct targeting in the Defence of the Alliance, under the DDA (Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area) concept," said Wing Commander Dave Crawley, SHAPE Strategic Employment.

STEADFAST JUPITER 2022 was a strategic, operational, and tactical-level exercise designed to train and evaluate the NATO Response Force 2023 under the lead of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, as well as several other NATO entities.

The exercise also contributed to the DDA concept, validating a variety of joint capabilities and strengthening NATO’s 360-degree approach to deterrence and defence involving different joint operations areas.
