SACEUR Hosts Commander's Conference at SHAPE

MONS, Belgium – Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Tod D. Wolters, hosted a Commander's Conference at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Nov. 23 to 24, 2021.

This tri-annual conference is an opportunity for the SACEUR to meet with Allied Command Operations (ACO) Commanders, Command Senior Enlisted Leaders and Political Advisors to discuss NATO priorities and the importance of adapting to meet today's evolving security challenges.

"This is a historic time for the Alliance. The one-billion people of the Euro-Atlantic area have placed their trust in us to continue providing peace and stability. Conferences like this help all of us in supporting this effort," said General Wolters.

The conference focused on Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area (DDA) Concept implementation developments and exercising the Command and Control (C2) arrangements required to conduct DDA. DDA is a military concept that outlines how NATO Allies will operate together in peace, crisis, and conflict to secure one another.

"DDA is especially important to the NATO military because it establishes an agreed Alliance view on 21st Century approaches to multi-domain action and a common vision of our strategy. With a strategy we can build plans. With plans we can define requirements to achieve mission success. These requirements inform Allies of where and how to best invest in military capabilities and readiness to meet the needs of tomorrow's challenges," said General Wolters.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the Chair of the Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, participated on the second day of the conference, providing their insights on NATO 2030 priorities and the future of NATO, including the important role the military play in the Alliance.

"In recent years, NATO has fundamentally shifted its efforts from out of area operations to collective defence. We have taken concrete steps to modernise our defence and deterrence architecture and dramatically improved our approach to military planning," the Secretary General said.

"I count on your continued leadership and support to take this important work forward," Mr. Stoltenberg added.

The conference, which is always chaired by SACEUR, is hosted at different Headquarters across Allied Command Operations on a rotating basis. The next conference will be held at NATO Allied Maritime Command in February 2022.
