SHAPE, Belgium - General Curtis M. Scaparrotti, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and First Deputy Minister of Defence conducted a phone call on Saturday, April 27, 2019 , utilising the SACEUR-Russian Chief of Defence secure channel of communication.

The two military leaders used this channel to discuss military issues of mutual interest in an effort to foster predictability and transparency.

This is their third phone call and follows their in-person meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan in December of last year.

Both agreed on the value of the continued use of military lines of communication.
