NATO leader visits Romanian military base

CONSTANTA, Romania -- Major General Valentin Becheru, commander of Romanian Communications and Information Systems Command, accompanied Major General Wolfgang Renner, commander of NATO CIS Group, to visit Mihail Kogᾰlniceanu Air Base, May 27, 2019.

General Renner wanted to hear first-hand about NATO’s defence and deterrence capabilities in the Black Sea Region and was given a briefing by the Italian Air Force Detachment who are on rotation in support of this capability.

“The cooperation between Italy and Romania is clearly well established with the personnel highly motivated towards the mission," General Renner said. "Credible air policing is vital in this region and the capabilities demonstrated today project a strong Deterrence message.”

In addition to NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic States and Poland, its forward presence extends to the southeast region. In the air, several Allies, including Canada, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom have reinforced Romania and Bulgaria’s efforts to protect their airspace. The Italian Air Force Detachment is currently deployed at MK Air Base in Constanta.
