Estonian Defence Forces Headquarters, Estonia – The roles of the NATO Force Integration Units (NFIU's) are a key Force enabler for the NATO Response Force (NRF) and this role became apparent during Exercise Spring Storm in Estonia which concluded on Friday, May 17, 2019.

The role of all our NATO NFIU's cannot be underestimated

With 8 NFIU's situated across NATO's flanks, the Alliance's ability to deploy rapidly for defensive operations is closely supported by these logistical Joint multi-functional headquarters. The Estonian NFIU in Tallinn provided support during Exercise SPRING STORM 19 and oversaw the key redeployment phase of up to 3000 personnel.

"In my view the Estonian NFIU is unique. Our detailed planning, processes and contributions are very well practised and we continually look at innovative procedures to add further value. We are probably the lead NFIU when it comes to pre-deployment planning and integrating the introduction and integration of Allied forces into Home Defence Plans," said Colonel Aron Kalmus Commander NFIU Estonia. 

"The role of all our NATO NFIU's cannot be underestimated and we must train as we fight. Training must be progressive and effective. The importance of fully understanding all levels of enablement for all Force Domains is a force multiplier," he added.

With NATO's ongoing adaptation, the importance of rapid movement by all available means in order to deploy remains a priority. The use of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) and NRF follow on Forces is a credible deterrent and Exercise NOBLE JUMP this year will practice and test force mobility by land, sea and air. Exercise NOBLE JUMP DEPLOYEX is being led by NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples.
