NATO Assurance Measures

Since 2014, NATO has implemented Assurance Measures (AM) which comprise a series of land, sea and air activities in, on and around the eastern part of Alliance territory. The Assurance Measures are designed to endure for as long as necessary. A geographically focused and comprehensive series of sustained AM offer a graduate, flexible and calibrated approach to assure Allies.

Currently Assurance Measures include: AWACS employment to preserve airspace integrity; increased Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance activities along the eastern borders in order to enhance NATO's understanding of the region; enhanced Air Policing to supplement national air policing capabilities; assistance to nations to refine their Special Operations Forces capabilities; employment of Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Standing Naval Forces to provide maritime situational awareness; and the execution of training and exercises across the eastern border to improve interoperability.

Tailored Assurance Measures for Turkey

In late 2015, Allies agreed on a package of Tailored Assurance Measures for Turkey (TAMT) to respond to the increasing security challenges on Turkish borders. These measures include additional AWACS presence in the region; increased maritime activities in the Eastern Mediterranean; and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance activities and information sharing.
